St John Ambulance welcomes and supports the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act 2015
This statement sets out the steps that St John Ambulance have taken to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking occurring within any part of its businesses or supply chain during the fiscal year ending 31 December 2017. From this point forward the Modern Slavery Act 2015 will be referred to at the “Act”.
The aim of the Act is in line with our own values and we want to ensure that companies from which we purchase products and services are operating ethically and responsibly in order to combat slavery and trafficking activities, with the same standards applying to our own supply chain.
As a charity we:
The charity is based in England with the registered office at St John’s Gate, London EC1M 4DA and has approximately 2,000 employees and 20,000 volunteers. The operational teams are supported by various departments:
We have an annual turnover in the region of £100m.
Our supply chain includes approximately 165 product suppliers. These companies are based throughout the world and vary considerably both in terms of size and amount spent with them. All our product suppliers are assessed before they are able to supply products to us. We are currently obtaining up to date supplier questionnaires.
We have a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery. The aim of the Act is in line with our own values and we want to ensure that companies from which we purchase products and services are operating ethically and responsibly in order to combat slavery and trafficking activities, with the same standards applying to our own supply chain. This is reflected in our Modern Slavery and Ethical Sourcing Policy which is in force across the charity and all employees and volunteers are responsible for ensuring that they understand and comply with the policy.
St John has defined its position and approach in its Modern Slavery and Ethical Sourcing policy. All volunteers and employees must comply with St John policy and procedure; the requirement is set out in our volunteer charter and forms part of employee’s obligations under their contract of employment. The full Modern Slavery and Ethical Sourcing policy is available to all SJA volunteers and employees on our intranet site, along with supporting guidelines and templates.
We require our suppliers to hold their suppliers to the same standards.
We will assess the potential risk of human trafficking and slavery with our existing suppliers and before engaging in a business relationship with suppliers, contractors and business partners and where appropriate, based on the risk factors, all existing and new suppliers will be required to confirm their adherence with our policy by signing a declaration to confirm this. We will carry out regular checks to ensure that nothing has changed and all suppliers are upholding their commitments and our values.
Following its initial adoption, we will periodically review the effectiveness of the steps we have taken to ensure that there is no slavery or human trafficking in our supply chains by continuously improving our policy and the procedure’s implemented.
This statement is made pursuant to section 54 (1) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and constitutes St John Ambulance’s slavery and human trafficking statement for the financial year ending 2016.
